In a brand new report, Enverus Intelligence® Analysis (EIR) examines the ripple results of Illinois’ ban on carbon storage beneath the Mahomet Aquifer, elevating pressing questions on the way forward for carbon seize, utilization and storage (CCUS) in areas with EPA-designated sole supply aquifers.

“A ban on sequestration beneath the Mahomet Aquifer in Illinois instantly impacts three CCUS initiatives, totaling 5.6 mtpa of storage capability,” stated Brad Johnston, analyst at EIR. “This raises concern for carbon storage initiatives in different areas with EPA sole supply aquifer rules, notably Louisiana.”

“If an identical ban is carried out in Louisiana, 58 mtpa of storage capability throughout 17 initiatives and 11 operators could possibly be in danger,” Johnston stated. “That is greater than a 3rd of the storage capability within the Gulf Coast area, and a couple of fifth of whole U.S. capability.”

Key takeaways:

Illinois’ CO₂ sequestration restrictions remove 5.6 MMtpa of carbon storage capability from Heartland Greenway and Vault 44.01 initiatives beneath the Mahomet Aquifer.

Some 58 MMtpa throughout 17 initiatives and 11 operators could possibly be in danger beneath the only supply Chicot and Southern Hills aquifers in Louisiana if an identical sequestration ban is imposed.
