From the BLS: Job Openings and Labor Turnover Abstract

The variety of job openings was little modified at 7.2 million in July, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics
reported at the moment. Over the month, each hires and complete separations have been unchanged at 5.3 million. Inside
separations, each quits (3.2 million) and layoffs and discharges (1.8 million) have been unchanged.

The next graph reveals job openings (black line), hires (darkish blue), Layoff, Discharges and different (purple column), and Quits (gentle blue column) from the JOLTS.

This collection began in December 2000.

Word: The distinction between JOLTS hires and separations is much like the CES (payroll survey) web jobs headline numbers. This report is for July; the employment report this Friday will probably be for August.

Word that hires (darkish blue) and complete separations (purple and light-weight blue columns stacked) are normally fairly shut every month. This can be a measure of labor market turnover.  When the blue line is above the 2 stacked columns, the financial system is including web jobs – when it’s under the columns, the financial system is shedding jobs.

The spike in layoffs and discharges in March 2020 is labeled, however off the chart to higher present the standard knowledge.

Jobs openings decreased in July to 7.18 million from 7.36 million in June.

The variety of job openings (black) have been down 4% year-over-year.

Quits have been down 5% year-over-year. These are voluntary separations. (See gentle blue columns at backside of graph for pattern for “quits”).
