U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Commerce Consultant Jamieson Greer maintain a press convention, following a gathering with Chinese language Vice Premier He Lifeng, on the day of U.S.-China talks on commerce, financial and nationwide safety points, in Madrid, Spain, September 15, 2025.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent mentioned Tuesday that President Donald Trump was prepared to let TikTok go darkish, and it was “what turned the tide” within the deal framework with China.

“President Trump made it clear that he would have been prepared to let Tiktok go darkish, that we weren’t going to surrender nationwide safety in favor of the deal,” Bessent instructed CNBC’s “Squawk Field.”

TikTok mother or father firm ByteDance remains to be a Sept. 17 deadline to divest the app’s U.S. operations or probably be shut down within the nation.

The Trump administration hasn’t but formally prolonged the deadline, although U.S. Commerce Consultant Jamieson Greer mentioned Monday that extra time could also be wanted for the deal to be finalized and signed.

Trump and Chinese language President Xi Jinping are anticipated to talk Friday to finalize the deal.
