Development Spending Elevated 0.2% in August

From the Census Bureau reported that total building spending decreased:

Development spending throughout August 2025 was estimated at a seasonally adjusted annual charge of $2,169.5 billion, 0.2 p.c above the revised July estimate of $2,165.0 billion. The August determine is 1.6 p.c beneath the August 2024 estimate of $2,205.3 billion.

Non-public spending elevated and public spending was unchanged:

Spending on non-public building was at a seasonally adjusted annual charge of $1,652.1 billion, 0.3 p.c above the revised July estimate of $1,647.5 billion. …

n August, the estimated seasonally adjusted annual charge of public building spending was $517.3 billion, nearly unchanged from the revised July estimate of $517.5 billion.

Non-public residential (crimson) spending is 6.5% beneath the height in 2022.

Non-public non-residential (blue) spending is 6.8% beneath the height in December 2023.

Public building spending (orange) is near the height.

Year-over-year Construction SpendingThe second graph reveals the year-over-year change in building spending.

On a year-over-year foundation, non-public residential building spending is down 2.0%. Non-public non-residential spending is down 4.0% year-over-year. Public spending is up 2.7% year-over-year.
